Jeci has always promoted and respected the values of free and open source software (foss). It is even its foundation. So it seemed logical to us to join its first defender in France, the association April, to promote and defend free software. Here is a brief presentation of April and our strong link with their ideas.

What is April ?

April is an association created in 1996. Its objective is to promote, raise awareness and defend free software among the general public and political decision makers. It aims to encourage a sharing of knowledge and free knowledge at all levels. To do so, it carries out concrete actions, and they are the ones who talk about it best!

Free Software

Reminder: The term "free" is used in the sense of "free speech", not of "free of charge"

“Free software” means software that respects users' freedom and community. Roughly, it means that the users have the freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software. Thus, “free software” is a matter of liberty, not price. To understand the concept, you should think of “free” as in “free speech”, not as in “free beer”. We sometimes call it “libre software”, borrowing the French or Spanish word for “free” as in freedom, to show we do not mean the software is gratis.

You may have paid money to get copies of a free program, or you may have obtained copies at no charge. But regardless of how you got your copies, you always have the freedom to copy and change the software, even to sell copies.

More on this definition

In the French version of this article is quoted a definition they are yet to translate here it is roughly translated, we felt it were more accurate to quote the GNU definition for a better understanding (see paragraph right above).

Free software is software that is provided with its source code and for which the use, study, modification, and distribution of modified versions are permitted. Free software is not necessarily free, although this is often the case. See original

You want to support April ? There are differente ways to participate : april.org/nous-aider

Although you might find it complicated to support a non profit which speaks a different langage than yours. In this case, if you still want to help maybe check out this non profit : fsf.org or search for a non profit nearby your area!

Why Jeci supports these values?

As we said, Jeci is a company founded around free and open source software. The values of sharing and freedom that free and open source defend are the essence of the reason that pushes Jeci to support April ; and also to use it daily and to propose services corresponding to these values. This also contribute to the development of the team, as the exploitation of open source code is extremely formative.

Fun fact: the founder of Jeci was already invested in free software during his studies as a member of the GUL (LUG - Linux User Group) of CaLviX (Gul du Calvados) - an association that aims to share and promote free software. He has since left the region, but still shares the same vision of free software and is happy to see that the association continues!
